Hadiths on the Virtue of Supplication

From Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ who said:
“There is nothing more honorable to Allah the Exalted than supplication.”

Supplication Is Worship

From al-Nu‘mān ibn Bashīr, from the Prophet ﷺ who said:
“Supplication is worship.”
Then he recited:
{Your Lord says: Call upon Me, I will respond to you. Indeed, those who are too arrogant to worship Me will enter Hell humiliated.}

And from Abū Hurayrah, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever does not ask Allah, He becomes angry with him.”

Hadiths on the Virtue of Dhikr

‘Abdullāh ibn Busr narrated that a man said:
“O Messenger of Allah, the duties of Islam have become too many for me; so tell me something I can hold firmly to.”
He said:
“Let your tongue remain moist with the remembrance of Allah.”

The Best of Your Deeds

Narrated by Abū al-Dardā’, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“Shall I not inform you of the best of your deeds, the purest of them with your Lord, the highest of them in your ranks, and better for you than spending gold and silver, and better for you than meeting your enemy, striking their necks and they striking your necks?”

They said, “Yes, indeed.”
He said, “The remembrance of Allah, the Most High.”
Mu‘ādh ibn Jabal added: “Nothing saves a person from Allah’s punishment more than the remembrance of Allah.”

The Virtue of Gatherings of Dhikr

Narrated by Abū Hurayrah and Abū Sa‘īd al-Khudrī — both testified that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“No group of people gather to remember Allah except that the angels surround them, mercy covers them, tranquility descends upon them, and Allah mentions them to those who are near Him.”

We Sat to Remember Allah

Narrated Abū Sa‘īd al-Khudrī:

Mu‘āwiyah once came out to the mosque and said:
“What has made you sit here?”
They replied: “We sat to remember Allah.”
He said: “By Allah, is it only that which made you sit?”
They said: “By Allah, nothing made us sit except that.”

He said: “I did not make you swear out of suspicion, for no one among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) narrated fewer hadiths from him than I did.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) once came out to a circle of his Companions and said:
‘What has made you sit here?’
They said: ‘We sat to remember Allah, to praise Him for guiding us to Islam, and for the blessings He has bestowed upon us.’

He said: ‘By Allah, is it only that which made you sit?’
They said: ‘By Allah, nothing made us sit except that.’

He said: ‘I did not make you swear out of suspicion. Indeed, Jibrīl came to me and informed me that Allah is boasting of you before the angels.’”

The Gathering That Lacks the Remembrance of Allah

Narrated by Abū Hurayrah:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“No group of people sits in a gathering in which they do not remember Allah, nor send blessings upon their Prophet, except that it will be a cause of regret for them. If Allah wills, He will punish them, and if He wills, He will forgive them.”

No One Supplicates Except That Allah Responds

Narrated by Jābir:
I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:

“There is no person who supplicates with a supplication except that Allah grants him what he asked for, or He averts from him an equivalent amount of harm — as long as he does not supplicate for something sinful or for severing family ties.”

Whoever Wishes that Allah Respond to Him

Narrated by Abū Hurayrah:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“Whoever would be pleased that Allah responds to him during times of hardship and distress, let him increase his supplication during times of ease.”

The Best Remembrance and the Best Supplication

Narrated by Jābir ibn ʿAbdullāh:
I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:

“The best form of remembrance is Lā ilāha illā Allāh,
and the best supplication is Al-ḥamdu lillāh.”
