Chapter: Faith

Chapter: Faith and the Saying of the Prophet ﷺ: "Islam is built upon five [pillars]"

It is both a statement and an action, and it increases and decreases. Allah the Exalted said:

  • “That they may increase in faith along with their [present] faith”
  • “And We increased them in guidance”
  • “And Allah increases those who are guided in guidance”
  • “And those who were guided, He increased them in guidance and gave them their righteousness”
  • “And those who believed, Allah increased them in faith”

And His statement:

  • “So fear them, and Allah increased them in faith”
  • “And it did not increase them except in faith and submission”

Love for Allah and hatred for Allah are from faith.

Umar ibn Abdul Aziz wrote to ‘Adi ibn ‘Adi:
“Faith has obligations, laws, limits, and practices. Whoever completes them has completed faith; whoever does not complete them has not completed faith. If I live, I will explain them to you so you can act upon them; if I die, I am not keen on being with you.”

Ibrahim said:

  • “So that my heart may be at ease.”

Mu'adh said:

  • “Sit with us; we will believe for a while.”

Ibn Mas’ud said:

  • “Certainty is the entirety of faith.”

Ibn ‘Umar said:

  • “A servant does not reach true piety until he abandons what he harbors in his heart.”

Mujahid said:

  • “He has prescribed for you”—O Muhammad, we have been enjoined a single religion.

Ibn ‘Abbas said:

  • “A law and a methodology”—a path and a Sunnah.

Chapter: Your Supplication is Your Faith

Ibn ‘Umar reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"Islam is built upon five [pillars]: the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger, establishing the prayer, giving zakah, performing Hajj, and fasting in Ramadan."

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: Matters of Faith

Allah the Exalted says:
"Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is in one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets, and gives his wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, and those who ask, and for freeing slaves; and establishes prayer and gives zakah; and those who fulfill their covenant when they make one; and those who are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous."
"Indeed, the believers have succeeded."

Abu Huraira reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
"Faith has over sixty branches, and modesty (al-hayaa) is a branch of faith."

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: The Muslim is One from Whom the Muslims are Safe from His Tongue and Hand

Abdullah ibn Amr reported from the Prophet ﷺ:
“The Muslim is the one from whom the Muslims are safe from his tongue and hand, and the emigrant (Muhajir) is the one who abandons that which Allah has forbidden.”

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: Which Islam is Best

Abu Musa reported:
They said, “O Messenger of Allah, which Islam is best?”
He ﷺ said:
“The one from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe.”

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: Feeding Food is Part of Islam

Abdullah ibn Amr reported that a man asked the Prophet ﷺ:
“Which form of Islam is best?”
He ﷺ said:
“To feed food and to greet with peace those you know and those you do not know.”ؤ

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: Part of Faith is Loving for One’s Brother What He Loves for Himself

Anas reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“None of you truly believes until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.”

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: Loving the Messenger ﷺ is Part of Faith

Abu Huraira reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“By Him in Whose Hand my soul is, none of you will truly believe until I am more beloved to him than his father and his child.”

Chapter: Faith

Anas reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to him than his father, his child, and all people.”

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: The Sweetness of Faith

Anas reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“There are three (qualities). Whoever possesses them will taste the sweetness of faith:

That Allah and His Messenger are more beloved to him than anything else.

That he loves a person solely for Allah’s sake.

That he dislikes returning to disbelief as he dislikes being cast into the Fire.”

Chapter: Faith

Anas reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“The sign of faith is the love of the Ansar, and the sign of hypocrisy is the hatred of the Ansar.”

Chapter: Faith

From ‘Ubada ibn As-Samit, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, with a group of his companions around him:
“Pledge allegiance to me that you will not associate anything with Allah, nor steal, nor commit adultery, nor kill your children, nor fabricate false accusations that you invent between your hands and feet, nor disobey in what is good. Whoever fulfills this, his reward is with Allah. Whoever commits any of this and is punished in this world, it will be an expiation for him. Whoever commits any of this and Allah conceals it, then it is up to Allah—He may pardon him, or He may punish him.”
So we gave him our pledge on that.

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: Part of Religion is Fleeing from Trials

From Abu Sa‘id Al-Khudri, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The best property of a Muslim will soon be sheep which he follows across mountain ridges and watering places, fleeing with his religion from trials.”

Chapter on the Prophet ﷺ saying ‘I am the most knowledgeable among you about Allah’ and that knowledge is a matter of the heart, according to Allah’s saying:
﴿But He will hold you accountable for what your hearts have earned﴾

Chapter: Faith

Aisha said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he commanded them to perform any deed, would command them according to what they were able to do. They would say: ‘We are not like you, O Messenger of Allah; indeed, Allah has forgiven you for your past and future sins.’ He would become angry until his anger was apparent on his face, then he would say: ‘I am the most God-fearing among you and the most knowledgeable about Allah.’”

Chapter: Faith

Anas reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“There are three qualities in a person who tastes the sweetness of faith:

That Allah and His Messenger are more beloved to him than anything else.

That he loves a person only for the sake of Allah.

That he hates to return to disbelief—after Allah has saved him from it—as much as he hates to be thrown into the Fire.”

Chapter: Faith

Abu Sa‘id Al-Khudri reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“The people of Paradise will enter Paradise, and the people of Hell will enter Hell. Then Allah Almighty will say: ‘Bring out those who have in their hearts the weight of a mustard seed of faith.’ They will be brought out blackened, and thrown into the river of life—or life itself, Malik is uncertain—and they will grow just as the seed grows on the edge of a riverbank. Have you not seen that it comes out yellow and twisted?”

Chapter: Faith

Abu Sa‘id Al-Khudri reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“While I was asleep, I saw people presented to me, and they were wearing shirts—some reaching the chest and some shorter than that. Then ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattab was presented to me wearing a shirt dragging on the ground. They asked: ‘What did you give priority to, O Messenger of Allah?’ He said: ‘Religion.’”

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: Modesty is part of faith

Ibn ‘Umar reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a man from the Ansar who was advising his brother about modesty. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Leave him, for modesty is part of faith.”

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: ﴿But if they repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, then leave them in peace﴾

Ibn ‘Umar reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“I have been commanded to fight the people until they testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establish prayer, and give zakah. If they do that, their blood and property are protected from me except by right of Islam, and their reckoning is with Allah.”

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: Whoever says that faith is action, according to the words of Allah the Exalted:
﴿And that is the Paradise which you are made to inherit for what you used to do﴾
And several scholars said regarding His words:
﴿So by your Lord, We will surely question them all about what they used to do﴾

Regarding the saying “There is no god but Allah”:
﴿For the like of this, let those who act do it﴾

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked: “Which deed is best?” He said: “Faith in Allah and His Messenger.” It was asked: “Then what?” He said: “Jihad in the cause of Allah.” It was asked: “Then what?” He said: “A Hajj that is accepted.”

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: If Islam is not in reality but only in submission or out of fear of death

Sa‘d said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave to a group while I was sitting. The Messenger ﷺ left a man who seemed to please me most, so I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what about so-and-so? By Allah, I see him as a believer.’ He said: ‘Or a Muslim.’ I was silent for a moment, then my own knowledge of him overcame me, so I returned to my statement: ‘What about so-and-so? By Allah, I see him as a believer.’ He said: ‘Or a Muslim.’ Then my knowledge of him overcame me again, so I returned to my statement. The Messenger ﷺ returned and said: ‘O Sa‘d, I would give to the man, while someone else is more beloved to me than him, for fear that Allah might cast him into the Fire.’”

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: Spreading Salam is from Islam

Ammar said: “Three things, whoever combines them has combined faith: fairness from yourself, giving Salam to the world, and spending from what is scarce.”

Abdullah ibn Amr reported: “A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: ‘Which Islam is best?’ He said: ‘You feed the food and greet with Salam those you know and those you do not know.’”

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: Ingratitude of relatives and continual disbelief.

Ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“I was shown Hell, and most of its inhabitants were women; they are ungrateful. It was asked: ‘Do they disbelieve in Allah?’ He said: ‘They are ungrateful to their relatives and ungrateful for kindness. If you were good to one of them for a lifetime, then she sees something from you, she would say: I have never seen any good from you.’”

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: Sins of the Jahiliyyah period do not expiate their doer except by shirk, as the Prophet ﷺ said: “O Abu Dhar, you insulted him by his mother; indeed, there is a trace of Jahiliyyah in you,” and Allah Almighty said: ﴿Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills﴾.

Al-Ma‘rur said:
“I met Abu Dhar at Rabdhah, wearing a garment, and his servant also wore a garment. I asked him about that, and he said: ‘I insulted a man by mocking him about his mother.’ The Prophet ﷺ said to me: ‘O Abu Dhar, you insulted him by his mother? Indeed, there is a trace of Jahiliyyah in you. Your brothers are your slaves, whom Allah has placed under your hands. Whoever has a brother under his authority should feed him from what he eats and clothe him from what he wears, and do not burden them beyond their capacity; and if you do burden them, then help them.’”

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: ﴿And if two parties among the believers fight, then reconcile between them﴾ — and He called them the believers.

Al-Ahnaf ibn Qais said:
“I went to support this man, and Abu Bakrah met me and asked: ‘Where are you going?’ I said: ‘I am going to support this man.’ He said: ‘Return, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “If two Muslims meet with their swords, both the killer and the killed will be in the Fire.”’ I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, this is the killer, so what about the one who is killed?’ He said: ‘He was eager to kill his companion.’”

Chapter: Faith

Abdullah said:
“When the verse was revealed: ﴿Those who believe and do not mix their faith with injustice﴾, the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked: ‘Which of us has not wronged?’ Then Allah revealed: ﴿Indeed, polytheism is a great injustice﴾.”

Chapter: Faith

Abu Huraira reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“The signs of a hypocrite are three: when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a promise, he breaks it; and when he is entrusted, he betrays.”

Chapter: Faith

Abdullah ibn Amr reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Four qualities, whoever possesses all of them is a complete hypocrite, and whoever possesses one of them has a characteristic of hypocrisy until he abandons it: When entrusted, he betrays; when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a covenant, he breaks it; and when he disputes, he behaves immorally.”

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: Standing in the Night of Qadr as Part of Faith

Abu Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever stands (in prayer) on the Night of Qadr with faith and seeking reward from Allah, all his previous sins will be forgiven.”

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: Jihad as Part of Faith

Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Allah has guaranteed for the one who goes out in His cause, driven by nothing but faith in Me and belief in My messengers, that I will return him either with the reward he has earned or with spoils of war—or that I will admit him into Paradise.
Were it not that I would cause hardship for my community, I would never stay behind any expedition.
And I would love to be killed in the cause of Allah, then brought back to life, then killed again, then brought back to life, and then killed once more.”

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: Voluntary Night Prayers (Qiyam) in Ramadan with Faith

Abu Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever performs the night prayers in Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, his past sins will be forgiven.”

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: Fasting in Ramadan with Faith and Seeking Reward

Abu Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever fasts in Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, his past sins will be forgiven.”

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: “The religion is ease,” and the statement of the Prophet ﷺ: “The most beloved religion to Allah is the upright, easy-going monotheism.”

Abu Hurayrah reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Indeed, the religion is ease; and no one overburdens himself in the religion except that it will overcome him. So be upright, draw near (to what is correct), rejoice, and seek help (in worship) during the early morning, the afternoon, and a portion of the night.”

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: Prayer as Part of Faith
And the statement of Allah: “And Allah would never cause your faith to be lost” — meaning your prayers offered facing the former direction (towards the Sacred House).

Al-Barā’ reported:
“When the Prophet ﷺ first arrived in Madinah, he stayed with his ancestors — or he said, his maternal relatives — from among the Anṣār. He prayed facing Jerusalem for sixteen months, or seventeen months, though he liked that his Qiblah be toward the Ka‘bah. The first prayer he offered after the change was the ‘Asr prayer, and some people prayed with him.

A man who had prayed with him passed by a mosque whose people were still bowing, and said: ‘I testify by Allah that I have just prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ facing Makkah.’ So they turned around as they were, facing the Ka‘bah.

The Jews and the People of the Book had been pleased when he used to pray toward Jerusalem, but when he turned his face toward the Ka‘bah, they denied and objected to it.

Al-Barā’ added regarding this same incident:
‘Men had died and been killed before the Qiblah was changed, and we did not know what to say about them. So Allah revealed: “And Allah would never cause your faith to be lost.”’”

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: The Excellence of a Person’s Islam

Abū Sa‘īd al-Khudrī reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
“When a servant embraces Islam and perfects his Islam, Allah wipes out every sin he had previously committed. After that comes the reckoning: a good deed will be rewarded tenfold up to seven hundred times, and a bad deed will be recorded only as its like—unless Allah pardons it.”

Chapter: Faith

Abū Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“If one of you perfects his Islam, then every good deed he does will be written for him as tenfold up to seven hundred times, and every bad deed he commits will be written only as its like.”

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: The most beloved religion to Allah is that which is done consistently.

ʿĀ’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) reported:
“The Prophet ﷺ entered upon me while a woman was with me.
He said: ‘Who is this?’
I said: ‘So-and-so,’ and I mentioned her prayers.
He said: ‘Stop! You should do what you are able to do. By Allah, Allah does not tire until you tire.
And the most beloved deed in the religion to Him is that which a person performs consistently.’”

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: The increase and decrease of faith, and the saying of Allah the Exalted:
“And We increased them in guidance.”
“And that the believers may increase in faith.”
And His saying: “Today I have perfected for you your religion.”
So whoever abandons something of perfection, his faith is deficient.

Anas reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever says Lā ilāha illā Allāh and in his heart is the weight of a barley grain of goodness will come out of the Fire;
and whoever says Lā ilāha illāh Allāh and in his heart is the weight of a wheat grain of goodness will come out of the Fire;
and whoever says Lā ilāha illāh Allāh and in his heart is the weight of an atom of goodness will come out of the Fire.”

Chapter: Faith

‘Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb reported:
“A man from the Jews said to him: ‘O Commander of the Believers, there is a verse in your Book which you recite; had it been revealed to us, the Jews, we would have taken that day as a festival.’
‘Umar said: ‘Which verse?’
He replied: “This day I have perfected for you your religion, completed My favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.”
‘Umar said: ‘We certainly know the day and the place in which it was revealed to the Prophet ﷺ: it was while he was standing at ‘Arafah on a Friday.’”

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: Zakat as Part of Islam

And His statement, the Exalted:
“They were not commanded except to worship Allah, being sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and give zakat; and that is the correct religion.”

Ṭalḥah ibn ‘Ubaydullāh reported:
“A man from the people of Najd came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with unkempt hair. The sound of his voice could be heard, but what he was saying could not be understood until he came close. He was asking about Islam. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘Five prayers in the day and night.’
He said: ‘Is there anything else upon me?’
He said: ‘No, unless you do voluntary acts.’
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘And fasting Ramadan.’
He said: ‘Is there anything else upon me?’
He said: ‘No, unless you do voluntary acts.’
Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned zakat to him.
He said: ‘Is there anything else upon me?’
He said: ‘No, unless you do voluntary acts.’
The man then turned away saying: ‘By Allah, I will not add to this nor decrease from it.’
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘He has succeeded if he is truthful.’”

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: Following Funerals as Part of Faith

Abū Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever follows the funeral of a Muslim out of faith and seeking reward, and remains with it until the prayer is offered over it and the burial is completed, he returns with two Qīrāṭs of reward; each Qīrāṭ is like (the size of) Mount Uhud. And whoever prays over it and returns before it is buried, he returns with one Qīrāṭ.”

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: The Believer’s Fear That His Deeds May Be Nullified Without Him Realizing

Ibrāhīm al-Taymī said:
“I never compared my words with my deeds except that I feared I might be lying.”

Ibn Abī Mulaykah said:
“I met thirty of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, all of them feared hypocrisy for themselves. Not one of them would say that he had the faith of Jibrīl or Mīkā’īl.”

It is reported from al-Ḥasan:
“None fears it except a believer, and none feels safe from it except a hypocrite.”

And one must beware of persisting in hypocrisy or sin without repentance, due to the saying of Allah the Exalted:
‘And they do not persist in what they have done while they know.’

Zubayd reported:
“I asked Abū Wā’il about the Murji’ah, and he said: ‘ʿAbdullāh narrated to me that the Prophet ﷺ said: Insulting a Muslim is wickedness, and fighting him is disbelief.’”

Chapter: Faith

‘Ubādah ibn al-Ṣāmit reported:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out intending to inform the people about the Night of Decree, but two men among the Muslims argued. He said: ‘I came out to tell you about the Night of Decree, but so-and-so and so-and-so argued, so it was lifted. Yet it may be better for you. Seek it on the seventh, the ninth, and the fifth (of the last ten nights).’”

Chapter: Faith

Abū Hurayrah reported:
“The Prophet ﷺ was one day sitting openly among the people when Gabriel came to him and said: ‘What is faith?’ He replied: ‘Faith is to believe in Allah, His angels, His meeting, His messengers, and to believe in the resurrection.’ He said: ‘What is Islam?’ He replied: ‘Islam is to worship Allah and not associate anything with Him, to establish the prayer, to pay the obligatory zakah, and to fast Ramadan.’ He said: ‘What is excellence (ihsān)?’ He replied: ‘It is to worship Allah as if you see Him, for even if you do not see Him, He certainly sees you.’ He said: ‘When is the Hour?’ He replied: ‘The one questioned about it knows no more than the one asking. But I will tell you about its signs: when the slave woman gives birth to her master, and when the barefoot shepherds of black camels compete in constructing tall buildings. There are five things which none knows except Allah.’ Then the Prophet ﷺ recited: ﴿إِنَّ اللهَ عِنْدَهُ عِلْمُ السَّاعَةِ﴾. Then he turned back, and the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Bring him back.’ But they saw nothing. He said: ‘That was Gabriel; he came to teach the people their religion.’”
Abū ‘Abdillāh said: He made all of this part of faith.

Chapter: Faith

‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Abbās reported that Abū Sufyān told him:
“Heraclius said to me: ‘I asked you whether they increase or decrease, and you claimed that they increase—and so it is with faith until it is complete. And I asked you whether anyone abandons his religion out of displeasure with it after entering into it, and you claimed that no one does—and such is faith when its sweetness enters the hearts; no one becomes displeased with it.’”

Chapter: Faith

Al-Nu‘mān ibn Bashīr reported that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
“The lawful is clear, and the unlawful is clear, and between them are doubtful matters that many people do not know. Whoever avoids the doubtful protects his religion and his honor; and whoever falls into the doubtful falls into the unlawful—like a shepherd who grazes around a sanctuary and is likely to enter it. Truly, every king has a sanctuary, and the sanctuary of Allah on His earth is His prohibitions. Truly, in the body there is a piece of flesh which, if it is sound, the whole body is sound; and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Truly, it is the heart.”

Chapter: Faith

Abū Jamrah said:
“I used to sit with Ibn ‘Abbās, and he would seat me on his couch. He said: ‘Stay with me until I assign you a share of my wealth.’ So I stayed with him for two months. Then he said:
‘When the delegation of ‘Abd al-Qays came to the Prophet ﷺ, he said: Who are the people? Or: Who is the delegation? They said: (We are) Rabī‘ah. He said: Welcome to the people—or the delegation—free of disgrace and free of regret.

They said: O Messenger of Allah, we are unable to come to you except in the sacred month, and between us and you stands this tribe from the disbelievers of Muḍar. So command us with a clear instruction that we may inform those behind us, and by which we may enter Paradise.

And they asked him about the drinks. So he commanded them with four things and forbade them from four things.

He commanded them to believe in Allah alone. He said: Do you know what belief in Allah alone is? They said: Allah and His Messenger know best.

He said: Bearing witness that there is no deity except Allah and that Muḥammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the prayer, giving the zakāh, fasting in Ramadan, and that you give one-fifth of the spoils (al-khums).’”

Chapter: Faith

‘Umar reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Actions are judged by intentions, and every person shall have only what he intended. So whoever’s migration was to Allah and His Messenger, then his migration is to Allah and His Messenger; and whoever’s migration was for some worldly gain he sought, or for a woman he desired to marry, then his migration is to whatever he migrated for.”

Chapter: Faith

Abū Mas‘ūd reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“When a man spends on his family seeking Allah’s reward for it, it is counted for him as charity.”

Chapter: Faith

Sa‘d ibn Abī Waqqās reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“You will never spend anything seeking thereby the Face of Allah except that you will be rewarded for it — even what you place in your wife’s mouth.”

Chapter: Faith

Chapter: The Prophet’s ﷺ Saying: “Religion is sincere advice—to Allah, His Messenger, the leaders of the Muslims, and their common folk” and Allah’s Saying: “If they are sincere to Allah and His Messenger”.

Jarīr ibn ‘Abdullāh said:
“I pledged allegiance to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to establish the prayer, to give the zakāh, and to offer sincere advice to every Muslim.”

Chapter: Faith

Ziyād ibn ‘Ilāqah said:
“I heard Jarīr ibn ‘Abdullāh say on the day al-Mughīrah ibn Shu‘bah died:
He stood up, praised Allah and glorified Him, and said:
‘Adhere to the fear of Allah, the One without partner, and to dignity and calmness until your leader comes to you — and he is coming to you now.’
Then he said: ‘Ask forgiveness for your leader, for he used to love pardon.’
Then he said: ‘As for what follows: I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: I pledge allegiance to you upon Islam. He stipulated upon me that I offer sincere advice to every Muslim. So I pledged allegiance to him on that. By the Lord of this mosque, I am indeed sincere to you.’
Then he sought forgiveness (of Allah) and sat down.”
