The Modes in Which the Qur’an Was Revealed
Ibn ‘Abbās reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Jibrīl recited to me upon one mode, and I repeated it to him.
I continued asking him to increase me, and he increased me,
until he reached seven modes.”
The Prophet’s Study of the Qur’an with Jibrīl
Ibn ‘Abbās reported:
“The Prophet ﷺ was the most generous of people in goodness,
and he was the most generous during the month of Ramadan,
because Jibrīl would meet him every night in the month of Ramadan until it ended.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would present the Qur’an to him,
and when Jibrīl met him, he was more generous in goodness than the sent wind.”
The Virtue of Sūrat al-Fātiḥah
Abū Sa‘īd ibn al-Mu‘allā reported:
“I was praying when the Prophet ﷺ called me, but I did not respond to him.
I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, I was praying.’
He said: ‘Did not Allah say: {Respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you}?’
Then he said: ‘Shall I not teach you the greatest sūrah in the Qur’an before you leave the mosque?’
He then took my hand, and when we were about to leave, I said:
‘O Messenger of Allah, you said you would teach me the greatest sūrah in the Qur’an.’
He said: ‘It is: Al-ḥamdu lillāhi rabbil-‘ālamīn.
It is the Seven Oft-Repeated (verses) and the Magnificent Qur’an that I have been given.’”
The Virtue of Sūrat al-Kahf
Al-Barā’ reported:
“A man was reciting Sūrat al-Kahf, and beside him was a horse tied with two ropes.
A cloud enveloped him, and it began to approach and draw nearer, and his horse began to shy away.
When morning came, he went to the Prophet ﷺ and mentioned that to him.
He said: ‘That was tranquility which descended because of the Qur’an.’”
The Virtue of the Noble Qur’an
Abū Mūsā reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“The example of the one who recites the Qur’an is like that of the citron: its taste is good and its fragrance is good.
And the example of the one who does not recite the Qur’an is like the date: its taste is good but it has no fragrance.
And the example of the wicked person who recites the Qur’an is like the sweet basil: its fragrance is good but its taste is bitter.
And the example of the wicked person who does not recite the Qur’an is like the colocynth: its taste is bitter and it has no fragrance.”
The Virtue of the One Who Learns the Qur’an
‘Uthmān reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“The best of you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it.”
Reciting the Qur’an for Worldly Purposes
‘Alī said:
“I heard the Prophet ﷺ say:
‘In the end of times there will come a people who are young in age and foolish in thought.
They will speak with the best words of creation.
They will pass out of Islam as an arrow passes through the prey.
Their faith will not go beyond their throats.
Wherever you meet them, kill them, for killing them brings a reward to the one who kills them on the Day of Resurrection.’”
