The Story of Prophet Shamuel (Samuel) (PBUH)

The Qur’an recounts a powerful episode from the history of the Children of Israel after Musa (peace be upon him), mentioning “a prophet of theirs” (Al-Baqarah 2:246–251). Many scholars of tafsir identify this prophet as Shamuel (Samuel) (peace be upon him), though the Qur’an does not explicitly name him. The story teaches that victory is tied to faith, obedience, and steadfastness—not numbers.

“Appoint for us a king so we may fight in Allah’s cause”

A group among the Children of Israel said to their prophet: “Appoint for us a king, and we will fight in the cause of Allah.” Their prophet warned that if fighting were ordained, many might turn away, but they insisted—saying they had been driven out of their homes and separated from their families.

Talut is chosen—and they اعتراض

The prophet informed them that Allah had appointed Talut (Saul) as king. Some objected: why would he have kingship over us when we are more deserving, and he has not been given great wealth? The Qur’an highlights the true معيار: Allah chose him and increased him in knowledge and physical strength.

The sign of kingship: the Ark carried by angels

They requested a sign. The Qur’an states that the sign of Talut’s kingship would be the return of the Ark, containing tranquility from their Lord and remnants from the legacy of Musa and Harun—carried by angels. It was a clear proof for those who believe.

The river test: who remains steadfast?

Then came a practical امتحان: a river test. Talut said Allah would test them by a river—whoever drank fully would not be with him, except one who only took a single handful. Many drank, and only a small group remained steadfast.

Facing Jalut and praying for victory

When the steadfast minority faced Jalut (Goliath) and his forces, some said they had no strength. But the believers said: how often a small group overcomes a large group by Allah’s permission. They prayed: “Pour upon us patience, make our feet firm, and grant us victory.”

The outcome: victory by Allah’s permission

The Qur’an concludes: they defeated them by Allah’s permission, and Dawud killed Jalut, and Allah granted Dawud kingship and wisdom. The story becomes a timeless lesson in patience, discipline, and reliance on Allah.
