Prophet Shu‘ayb (peace be upon him) was sent to a people known for injustice in trade—cheating in measure and weight and spreading corruption. The Qur’an presents his mission as a combined reform: pure worship of Allah (Tawhid) and honesty and justice in public life.
Shu‘ayb called his people to worship Allah alone and warned them not to reduce measures and weights, not to deprive people of what is rightfully theirs, and not to spread corruption after reform.
In Surah Hud (11:88), Shu‘ayb clarifies that he seeks nothing but reform as much as he can, and that success comes only from Allah—upon Him he relies and to Him he returns.
His people mocked the idea that faith should affect business behavior and even threatened to expel him and the believers unless they returned to their ways (Qur’an 7:88).
The Qur’an describes the punishment of the wrongdoers with different expressions across passages: a tremor (rajfah), a blast (sayhah), and the punishment of the “Day of the Shade” (Qur’an 26:189). The safest presentation is to affirm that a severe punishment came upon them as described in the Qur’an, without adding unverifiable details.
