Prophet Ya‘qub (Jacob) (peace be upon him) is among Allah’s honored prophets. His story is most famously highlighted in the Qur’an through Surah Yusuf, where we see profound trials, the meaning of “beautiful patience”, and unwavering trust in Allah.
The events begin when Yusuf (peace be upon him) shares a remarkable dream with his father. Ya‘qub understood that the dream carried great significance, so he advised Yusuf not to tell it to his brothers, fearing that jealousy might be stirred in their hearts.
Jealousy grew among Yusuf’s brothers, and they plotted against him, taking him away from his father. They then returned to Ya‘qub with a false account. Ya‘qub faced the shock with a believing heart and said his well-known words: “So beautiful patience.” He sought help from Allah alone.
Years passed and Ya‘qub remained firm in faith—deeply saddened, yet never despairing of Allah’s mercy. The Qur’an describes how grief affected him until his eyes turned white from sorrow, but his heart stayed connected to Allah.
Another painful test came with the loss of Binyamin (Benjamin), Yusuf’s brother. The sorrow was renewed, and once again Ya‘qub embodied beautiful patience. His grief did not cut his bond with Allah; it increased his closeness and supplication.
One of the greatest lessons from Ya‘qub’s story is that he did not pour his complaint out to people. Instead, he said the words of a true believer: “I only complain of my suffering and my grief to Allah.” He became a model of spiritual etiquette, endurance, and reliance upon Allah.
His hope never ended. In a moment filled with faith and optimism, he said: “Indeed, I sense the scent of Yusuf.” Then relief came: Yusuf was found alive, and Yusuf’s shirt was sent, which—by Allah’s permission—became a means for Ya‘qub’s sight to return. The family was reunited after a long separation.
