Yusha‘ ibn Nun (peace be upon him) is widely known in Islamic tradition. The Qur’an does not explicitly name him, but it mentions Musa’s “young companion” in Surah Al-Kahf (18:60–65). Many tafsir sources identify that companion as Yusha‘ ibn Nun. For accuracy, this article separates what is explicitly Qur’anic from what is identified in tafsir and what is established in authentic hadith.
The Qur’an states that Musa said to his young companion that he would continue until reaching the junction of the two seas. The story then mentions the fish and their forgetting, and finally meeting a servant of Allah (Al-Khidr) who was granted special knowledge.
While the Qur’an does not name the companion, many scholars identify him as Yusha‘ ibn Nun in tafsir literature.
Authentic hadith reports mention that the sun was held back for a prophet during a battle. Scholars commonly identify that prophet as Yusha‘ ibn Nun. This point is from hadith, not a Qur’anic verse, so it should be presented accordingly.
Verification note: Qur’anic foundation: Surah Al-Kahf 18:60–65. The identification of the companion as Yusha‘ is from tafsir, and the “sun held back” report is from authentic hadith.
