Mubahala is a significant and deeply meaningful event in Islam.
It refers to the act of calling down Allah’s curse on the lying party when two sides disagree on a religious matter, after presenting evidence and failing to reach an agreement. It represents the highest level of challenge in proving the truth, as both parties leave the judgment to Allah to reveal who is truthful and who is lying.
The story of Mubahala is mentioned in the Qur’an as a unique event that confirms the truthfulness of the prophetic message.
The Mubahala verse appears in Surah Aal-Imran, verse 61.
This verse was revealed during a dialogue between Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and a delegation of Christians from Najran, who came to dispute about Jesus (peace be upon him) and to reject the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him).
The verse reads:
“If anyone disputes with you concerning him after knowledge has come to you, say: ‘Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women and your women, ourselves and yourselves, and then we pray, and may the curse of Allah be upon the liars.’”
(Aal-Imran, 3:61)
This verse was revealed when the Najran Christians came to Medina to argue with the Prophet about Jesus (peace be upon him), insisting that he was the Son of God. The Prophet presented clear Qur’anic evidence that Jesus was Allah’s servant, His messenger, and a word given to Mary by Allah.
When the debate continued and they persisted in their false claims, Allah instructed His Prophet to invite them to Mubahala. This was a divine challenge to reveal the truth: if the Prophet spoke truthfully, the liars would face Allah’s curse. If the Christians had been on the right path, they would not have feared the Mubahala. However, they realized they were in the wrong.
When the Prophet invited them to Mubahala, the delegation hesitated. After consulting among themselves, they decided not to proceed with the challenge, recognizing the Prophet’s seriousness and fearing Allah’s curse if they were lying. Their leader reportedly said:
“By Allah, if we engage in Mubahala, we will be destroyed; no man or woman, young or old will survive.”
They then made peace with the Prophet and agreed to pay the jizya (tribute).
The Mubahala verse demonstrates the greatness of Islam and the strength of its argument. It also shows the Prophet’s confidence in the truth brought by Allah. Furthermore, it highlights the esteemed status of the Prophet’s family, whom he brought forward for the Mubahala as the closest and most beloved to him.
