What are the six signs that are said to indicate the presence of the Angel of Death?

In the journey of human life, death remains the ultimate and inescapable truth — the moment when worldly life ends and the journey to the Hereafter begins. This eternal reality has preoccupied human thought across ages, as cultures and religions have passed down their own depictions of the moments preceding death. In Islamic tradition, as in others, there are references to the arrival of the Angel of Death who comes to take the soul.

The idea of seeking “six signs of the Angel of Death’s presence” likely stems from the human desire to understand this unseen moment and prepare for it. But are there truly six specific signs that foretell the approach of death? Do they have a basis in authentic Islamic texts, or are they popular traditions passed down through generations?
It is essential here to distinguish between what is stated in the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah, and what belongs to unauthenticated or folkloric reports.

Knowledge of the unseen — including the timing and manner of death — belongs solely to Allah. Yet, some physical and spiritual indications may accompany a person’s final moments. These are not absolute signs but are commonly observed at the approach of death.

Possible signs that the Angel of Death is near

  1. Physical signs (signs of dying): Coldness of hands and feet: The body gradually loses warmth, especially in the extremities. Relaxation of muscles: The body weakens; movement and speech become difficult. Change in skin color: The face may become pale, yellowish, or bluish. Difficulty in breathing: Breaths become shallow and irregular; a “death rattle” may be heard. Loss of appetite: The person no longer feels the desire to eat or drink. Confusion or unconsciousness: Awareness decreases, and the person may slip into a coma.
  2. Desire for solitude: The dying person may wish to be left alone in the final moments.
  3. Seeing unseen beings: Some people report seeing angels or other unseen presences before death. These are spiritual experiences not perceived by others.
  4. Ease in saying the Shahada (testimony of faith): Being able to utter “La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadun Rasul Allah” easily is regarded as a sign of a good ending.
  5. Peace after suffering: After enduring pain, some experience sudden calmness and serenity before passing away.
  6. Sweating of the forehead: Certain hadiths mention that a believer’s death accompanied by sweat on the forehead is a sign of a blessed death.

These signs are not definitive nor universally experienced; every soul’s departure is unique.
Rather than seeking these signs, the true wisdom lies in preparing for death — through faith, repentance, and righteous deeds.
