So which of the favors of your Lord will you deny?

The Reason for the Revelation of Surah Ar-Rahman (English Translation)

Surah Ar-Rahman, often called “The Bride of the Qur’an,” is one of the most beautiful chapters of the Qur’an, distinguished by the repeated verse:

“Then which of the favors of your Lord will you deny?” — mentioned 31 times throughout the surah.

Although there is no single, specific incident reported as the reason for its revelation, scholars have identified historical and contextual factors that help explain its themes — particularly regarding the divine name “Ar-Rahman” (The Most Merciful).

1. Disagreement About Its Place and Time of Revelation

Scholars differ on whether Surah Ar-Rahman is Makki (revealed before the Hijrah) or Madani (after the Hijrah).

The majority opinion is that it is Makki, since its content — focusing on Tawheed (monotheism), the power of Allah, and descriptions of Paradise and Hell — matches the style of other Makki surahs.

2. Possible Historical Contexts and Reasons for Revelation

a) Response to the Pagans’ Denial of the Name “Ar-Rahman”

The strongest opinion is that this surah was revealed in response to the disbelievers’ rejection of the name “Ar-Rahman.”

They claimed ignorance of it or denied it altogether.

This was made clear during the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, when the Prophet ﷺ dictated, “In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.”

The Qurayshi representative, Suhayl ibn ‘Amr, objected, saying:

“As for ‘Ar-Rahman’ — we do not know who that is! Write instead: ‘In Your Name, O Allah.’”

Their rejection of the divine name was also described in Surah Al-Furqan (25:60):

“When they are told, ‘Prostrate to the Most Merciful,’ they say, ‘What is the Most Merciful?’ and it increases them in aversion.”

Thus, Surah Ar-Rahman begins with a direct answer:

“The Most Merciful — He taught the Qur’an.”

Implying: This is the One you deny; He is the source of revelation, creation, and all blessings.

b) Refutation of the Claim “A Human Teaches Him”

Some disbelievers accused the Prophet ﷺ of being taught by a human being.

Allah refuted this claim in Surah An-Nahl (16:103):

“We certainly know that they say, ‘It is only a human being who teaches him.’”

Surah Ar-Rahman refutes this by declaring:

“The Most Merciful taught the Qur’an.”

— emphasizing that the Qur’an’s source is divine, not human.

c) Manifesting Allah’s Majesty and Blessings for Humans and Jinn

Beyond responding to specific denials, the surah aims to demonstrate Allah’s mercy, power, and countless favors bestowed upon both humankind and the jinn.

The repetition of the verse:

“Then which of the favors of your Lord will you deny?”

serves several purposes:

To emphasize divine mercy: Allah’s compassion encompasses all creation.

To remind of His blessings: Creation of man, the sun and moon, the seas, fruits, and more.

To rebuke denial: The repeated question confronts disbelief and awakens the conscience.

The Prophet ﷺ once recited this surah to his companions, who remained silent.

He said:

“I recited it to the jinn, and their response was better than yours.

Every time I came to the verse ‘Then which of the favors of your Lord will you deny?’ they said:

‘None of Your favors do we deny, our Lord — all praise is Yours.’”

(Reported by Tirmidhi)

3. The Miraculous Nature of Surah Ar-Rahman

Surah Ar-Rahman is a miracle in both style and meaning:

Linguistic beauty: Its rhythm, harmony, and repetition move the heart.

Scientific hints: References to natural phenomena like the meeting of the seas, pearls, and coral reflect divine wisdom.

Psychological depth: It inspires awe, gratitude, hope, and humility all at once.

Conclusion

Surah Ar-Rahman is a timeless reminder of Allah’s boundless mercy and His countless favors upon both humans and jinn.

It calls us to reflect, give thanks, and acknowledge the blessings of Ar-Rahman in every breath of life.
