The travel prayer is not just words; it is an expression of reliance on Allah and entrusting every step to Him, especially when away from family and homeland.

Why Do We Pray When Traveling?

The travel prayer has deep meanings and significance:

1. Reliance on Allah (Tawakkul): The traveler acknowledges their weakness and need for Allah’s protection and care. Prayer is an expression of this trust and surrender.
2. Asking for guidance and ease: Unexpected challenges and obstacles may occur during travel. Through prayer, the traveler asks Allah to make the journey easy and to reach their destination successfully.
3. Seeking help in hardships: Long distances, fatigue, loneliness, or feeling of alienation can weigh on the traveler. Prayer provides spiritual strength and psychological peace.
4. Protection from dangers: Travel may involve accidents, illnesses, or other hazards. Prayer acts as a shield against all forms of harm.

Travel Prayer (Text)

The comprehensive travel prayer from the Sunnah of the Prophet is as follows:

“Subhânalladhî sakkara lanâ hâdhâ wa mâ kunna lahu muqrînîn, wa innâ ilâ Rabbina lamunqalibûn. Allahumma innâ nas’aluka fî safarinâ hâdhâ al-birra wa at-taqwâ, wa mina’l-‘amali mâ tarda. Allahumma hawwin alaynâ safaranâ hâdhâ wa atwi ‘annâ bu’dahu. Allahumma anta’s-sâhibu fî’s-safar wa’l-khalîfa fî’l-ahl. Allahumma innî a’ûzü bika min wa’thâ’i’s-safar, wa kâabatil-manzar, wa sû’il-munqalabi fî’l-mâli wa’l-ahl.”

Meaning of the Prayer:

• Subhânalladhî sakkara lanâ hâdhâ wa mâ kunna lahu muqrînîn: Glorifying Allah and acknowledging His power in making travel possible.
• Wa innâ ilâ Rabbina lamunqalibûn: Remembering that no matter how long the journey is, our ultimate return is to Allah.
• Allahumma innâ nas’aluka fî safarinâ hâdhâ al-birra wa at-taqwâ, wa mina’l-‘amali mâ tarda: Asking for goodness, piety, and actions that please Allah during the journey.
• Allahumma hawwin alaynâ safaranâ hâdhâ wa atwi ‘annâ bu’dahu: Asking Allah to make the journey easy and the distance and difficulties manageable.
• Allahumma anta’s-sâhibu fî’s-safar wa’l-khalîfa fî’l-ahl: Entrusting Allah to be the companion during the journey and protector of family in one’s absence.
• Allahumma innî a’ûzü bika min wa’thâ’i’s-safar, wa kâabatil-manzar, wa sû’il-munqalabi fî’l-mâli wa’l-ahl: Seeking refuge with Allah from travel fatigue, distressing sights, and adverse outcomes in wealth and family.

Etiquette of the Prayer:

• Face the Qibla (if possible)
• Raise the hands as a sign of supplication
• Be persistent and repeat the prayer with certainty
• Maintain focus and humility in the heart
• Begin by praising Allah and sending blessings upon the Prophet

The travel prayer is the believer’s weapon in solitude and a balm for the soul during the journey. It should be recited with a conscious heart, relying on Allah and trusting in His protection. Allah is the best guardian and the most merciful.
