What are the conditions of the Eid al-Adha sacrifice?
The Eid al-Adha sacrifice (Qurbani) is a sacred ritual in Islam. It is an act of worship that brings a believer closer to Allah and expresses gratitude and faith in Him.
For the Qurbani (sacrifice) to be valid and accepted, certain conditions must be met — both for the person offering the sacrifice and for the animal being sacrificed.
🔹 Conditions of the Qurbani:
The conditions of the Eid al-Adha sacrifice are divided into two main parts:
1. General Conditions for the Person Offering the Sacrifice
- Islam: The sacrifice is only obligatory upon Muslims.
- Sanity: It is not required from those who are mentally ill.
- Maturity: It is not obligatory upon children who have not reached puberty.
- Freedom: It is not required from slaves.
- Financial ability: The person must have sufficient wealth to purchase a sacrificial animal.
2. Conditions for the Sacrificial Animal
- Type: The animal must be one of the livestock species — camel, cow, or sheep.
- Age: The animal must meet the required age — five years for camels and cows, and at least one year for sheep.
- Health: The animal must be free from defects such as lameness, blindness, or chronic illness.
- Ownership: The animal must belong fully to the person offering it; it cannot be stolen or partly owned by another.
- Freedom from visible defects: It should not have obvious flaws such as broken limbs, blindness, or extreme thinness.
- Fattening: It is recommended that the animal be healthy and well-fed.
- Time of sacrifice: The sacrifice must be performed between sunrise on the day of Eid al-Adha and sunset on the last day of Tashreeq (the fourth day of Eid).
🔹 Additional Notes:
- Best type of sacrifice: The most virtuous is the camel, followed by the cow, then the sheep.
- Sharing: A camel or cow can be shared by up to seven people, whereas a sheep is only valid for one person.
- Participation: It is preferable to offer the sacrifice individually, but joint ownership is permissible.
- Charity: It is recommended to give a portion of the raw meat as charity to the poor.
🔹 Tips for Choosing the Right Sacrifice:
- Age: Older animals generally yield more meat.
- Weight: Choose an animal that suits your family’s needs.
- Health: Ensure the animal is free from illness or injury.
- Price: Compare prices between different sellers before purchasing.
Finally, make sure to buy your sacrificial animal from trusted and reliable sources to ensure its health and compliance with Islamic rulings.
