How is the Istikhara prayer performed?

How to Perform the Istikhārah Prayer

In the journey of life, a Muslim faces many decisions — some major, some minor — yet in all cases, the believer seeks guidance and success from Allah. One of the blessed means to seek divine direction is the Istikhārah prayer, a Sunnah taught by the Prophet ﷺ, guiding the believer to turn to Allah sincerely and trustfully when uncertain about a matter.

Istikhārah is not merely two units of prayer; it is a heartfelt act of devotion that reflects our recognition of human limitation and God’s infinite wisdom and power. It expresses a believer’s faith that all goodness lies in Allah’s hands, and true success comes only through Him.

Steps to Perform Istikhārah

  1. Intention (Niyyah):
Before starting, the person should make a sincere intention to seek Allah’s guidance in a specific matter.
  2. Ablution (Wudu):
Perform wudu just as for any prayer, preparing spiritually and physically to stand before Allah.
  3. Praying Two Rak‘ahs:
Pray two non-obligatory (nafl) rak‘ahs. In the first rak‘ah after al-Fātiḥah, it is recommended to recite Sūrat al-Kāfirūn. In the second rak‘ah after al-Fātiḥah, Sūrat al-Ikhlāṣ may be recited.
However, this is not obligatory; any verses from the Qur’an may be read.
  4. Supplication After Salām:
After finishing the prayer, raise your hands and recite the Istikhārah supplication taught by the Prophet ﷺ:

“O Allah, I seek guidance from Your knowledge and seek ability from Your power, and I ask You from Your immense favor. For You are able, while I am not; You know, while I do not; and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allah, if You know that this matter (mention the specific matter) is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs — or said: in my present and future — then ordain it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me. But if You know that it is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs — or said: in my present and future — then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree for me what is good wherever it may be, and make me pleased with it.”
(Narrated by al-Bukhārī)

  1. Reflection and Reliance:
After making the du‘ā’, entrust the matter to Allah completely. A dream or vision is not required for the answer. Often, the heart will incline toward one option, or Allah will ease one path. True Istikhārah lies in trusting His decree.
