What are the obligatory acts of prayer?
Obligatory Acts of Prayer (Wajibat of Salat)
The obligatory acts of prayer are the words, actions, and movements that a Muslim must perform in every prayer. They include the following:
- Opening Takbir (Takbir al-Ihram):
The prayer must begin by raising the hands and saying “Allahu Akbar” to start the prayer. - Reciting Surah Al-Fatiha:
Al-Fatiha must be recited in every rak’ah, as it is one of the essential pillars of the prayer. - Bowing (Ruku’):
The worshipper must bow at the waist, saying “Subhana Rabbiye’l-Azim” at least three times. - Prostration (Sujood):
Prostration is obligatory; the forehead, nose, hands, knees, and feet should touch the ground, saying “Subhana Rabbiye’l-Ala” at least three times. - Tashahhud:
The final tashahhud must be recited, sitting and saying “At-tahiyyatu lillahi wa’s-salawatu wa’t-tayyibat,” and testifying that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His messenger. - Salam (Ending the Prayer):
The prayer is concluded by turning the head to the right and left, saying “Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah” once on each side.
By fulfilling these obligations, a Muslim performs the prayer correctly and in a way accepted by Allah.
